The Novelty Hill/Januik Winery is a big, concrete, wine-making monolith located just outside of Seattle in the shimmering suburb of Woodinville. I have to give them credit for trying. I checked the Washington Wine Commission Fee Collector website this morning to find a “Snipes Mountain AVA established” headline in the Washington Wine News part of the website. The news is dated as February 20th 2009, the day the Snipes Mountain AVA was officially established, and the same day Mutineer ripped into the organization for NOT having any information about the new Snipes Mountain AVA, which tells us that this information was added either late Friday night or sometime over the weekend. The Pacific Northwest offers beer lovers so many things; exceptional beer bars, brewpubs, breweries, and what I think is the coolest beer store ever, 99 Bottles. When you walk through the door you are greeted by a warm staff and a chilly room filled with over 900 different beers. Using traditional coolers for some of the beer and keeping the rest of the store at a cool 64-65 degrees assures that all of your purchases have been maintained with the utmost care. I was excited to write about the Snipes Mountain AVA gaining official status but ended up spending my day trying to figure out how and why the Washington Wine Commission could botch this up so badly. I posted a blog about it earlier today and have already had two Washington wineries contact me after reading the blog to vent about WWC dropping the ball on the Snipes Mountain AVA as well as past ball droppings. “Being close to danger is just part of the job”, says Jeff Dorenbush of Mutineer Magazine on location where water had devoured a road.
People always talk about water like it is this awesome thing, and alcohol like it’s the enemy (See Jesus + Hatchets = No More Alcohol). In some ways it is, but when was the last time tequila roared mercilessly through a populated area? This is what water has done tonight in the Pacific Northwest, and being that the Mutineers are dedicated to covering all things beverage, they jimmy-rigged a Land Cruiser snorkel kit to the Mutineer Passat and headed to ground zero for ultimate coverage. While the car snorkel was a hit, things fell apart when the Mutineers realized that no one had packed a flash light or umbrella. Furthermore, no one had any journalistic experience covering merciless floods, and with a rented copy of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and nachos waiting back at Mutineer HQ, things just began to feel not-meant-to-be.
