An unlikely combination, Familia Camarena Tequila has partnered with the Minnesota Vikings for a three-year marketing sponsorship. Announced just a day after the kickoff of the 2011 NFL season and the nail biting conclusion of the Green Bay/New Orleans game, the terms of the marketing partnership include rights to the Minnesota Vikings logos, as well as in-stadium brand exposure during all Vikings regular season home games.
“Camarena Tequila’s partnership with the Vikings is an integral part of our marketing strategy focused on continued consumer trial and awareness of Camarena Tequila,” said Gerard Thoukis, Director of Marketing for Camarena. “We look forward to a great inaugural season with this well-respected organization.”
Less than two years old, Familia Camarena Tequila’s professional sports marketing strategy has followed suit with the brand’s more than double-digit growth since its inception in 2010. Announcement of Familia Camarena Tequila’s partnership with the Vikings coincides with sponsorship agreements with six Major League Baseball clubs, two National Basketball Association teams and three additional National Football League teams this year.
Breweries have been partnering with professional sports teams for years, it’s nice to see spirits trying their hand in that arena.
This fall, Don Julio will release a tequila unlike anything ever seen before. The tequila, Don Julio 70 Añejo Claro, is being launched to honor the 70th anniversary of the year Don Julio González began creating tequila at the very young age of 17.
What makes it unique? It’s a clear añejo. To be considered an añejo, or aged tequila, the tequila by law must spend a minimum of one year in oak barrels and no more than three years. During this time, the tequila pulls flavor and color from the barrel. In contrast, a blanco (“white”) or plata (“silver”) tequila is a clear tequila that spends little or no time in stainless or oak, no more than 2 months. Because of spending so little time in barrels (or none at all), the tequila remains clear.
With Don Julio 70 Añejo Claro, Don Julio Master Distiller Enrique de Colsa is able to get the rich, complex flavors of a traditional añejo in a liquid that is filtered to become a clear spirit. It spends 18 months in reclaimed American oak before being filtered, giving the tequila its unique clarity. In order to return Tequila Don Julio to a clear silver color, the aged liquid is filtered using a special process where electronically magnetized particles are added to the aged liquid. The free radicals in the particles bond to the coloring. After a certain period of time passes, the particles containing the color molecules are filtered out, producing a clear Añejo tequila.
Tequila Don Julio 70 will be available at participating stores nationwide, in Mexico and at Duty Free stores beginning in fall 2011. The 750ml bottle has a suggested retail price of $70.
This week’s installment of The Cocktail Spirit with Robert Hess brought to you by the Small Screen Network brings you the Tequila Old Fashioned. According to Robert Hess, “Think there is only one way to make an Old Fashioned? Think again. Unlike drinks such as the Martini, Margarita, and Daiquiri which have fairly specific recipes, the “Old Fashioned” emerged during the late 1800′s as a way to refer to a cocktail as it was originally made in the “old days”. The old cocktail books would refer to “Old Fashioned Whiskey Cocktail” so there was no confusion as to what spirit to use. While today it is simply assumed that Whiskey will be the ingredient in your Old Fashioned (or Brandy if you are from Minnesota), that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy this style of cocktail with other spirits. So join me as I make mine with Tequila. And since cocktails should be all about celebrating the spirit, I’ll be using a quality tequila, specifically Hornitos 100% blue agave tequila.”
Since July is National Tequila Month and the theme for this #MutineerMonday is Tequila, what better way to spend it than by learning from Robert Hess how to make a Tequila Old Fashioned … and then drinking it, of course!
The mission of Mutineer Monday is to advocate and promote the fine beverage industry by challenging the masses to “Join The Mutiny” and raise a glass (whether it be alcohol or non) to igniting and inspiring a fine beverage revolution!
Each week, we reach out to our readers, our Twitter followers, our Facebook fans, our contributors, our favorite bloggers and writers, and even our own team — asking everyone to share how they will be partaking in Mutineer Monday. To participate, all one needs to do is indulge in a delicious fine beverage (or two or three) and leave a comment on our blog, on our Facebook wall, or give a shout-out on Twitter using the hashtag #MutineerMonday (and #JoinTheMutiny if you have enough characters). And if you are feeling particularly ambitious, feel free to do all three!
Since July is National Tequila Month, today’s #MutineerMonday theme is tequila. What’s your favorite tequila? What’s your favorite type; blanco, joven, reposado, añejo, extra añejo? Do you have a favorite tequila based cocktail?
Wait, another political movement named after a beverage? Yup! But this time they’ve gone a little harder than tea and have chosen Tequila .. and they even have Don Abraham Tequila as a sponsor. Where you at, Lipton?
According to their website, The National Tequila Party Movement is a national tour of concerts, events, dinners and rallies that will encourage a massive Latino Get Out The Vote. This movement is a non-partisan movement. We don’t care how people vote, we just want them to get on the early ballot system, become consistent primary and general election voters.
Regular Mutineer Magazine columnist Dan Dunn and author of the new book Living Loaded was recently on on the Conan O’Brien Show where Dan showed Conan how to make some Cinco de Mayo cocktails using Hornitos Tequila. Though Conan’s “cocktail” was pretty much just a lot bell pepper and a lot of tequila, the drink itself was bell Jalapeno-infused Hornitos tequila, bell pepper, celery bitters, pineapple juice, lime juice, a dash of hot sauce and shaken with ice and strained into a salt-rimmed shot glass .. and in Conan’s case, more tequila .. and then, more tequila.
The next drink would be rimmed with maple syrup and bacon and then a shot of Hornitos Añejo tequila
This is a pretty classic routine by Breuer. Breuer’s take on drunkenness is pretty psychedelic, with different alcohols becoming epic characters heading to a party in your stomach… you know it’s all true.
