OMG! Sierra Nevada might open up a brewery on the East Coast. Old News? Probably. The way that the company undertook the fact-finding mission, or at least the one in the New River Valley of Virginia, is the story that you probably haven’t heard. A source tells me that Ken and Brian Grossman came to Blacksburg, Virginia to meet with professors at Virginia Tech. The duo came in fully armed with fake names and business information. Not sure if they had fake moustaches and noses attached to glasses though. I find this funny because, as a founder of the craft beer revolution, Ken’s got a face that lots of folks recognize. It’s akin to putting a sheet over a rhinocerous and saying it’s a dining table. It might fool some folks, but it won’t fool everyone.
Regardless of the shenanigans that the Grossmans and Sierra Nevada pulled on their site visits, I applaud their efforts. The speculation is that beer is costing them a fortune to ship to the East Coast, so it would be easier and cheaper to just make it here. It’s a green initiative that makes economic sense, and it’s pretty rad that they’ve identified it and are taking steps in that direction. They’re greenifying an already uber-environmentally conscious business. Cheers to Sierra Nevada for stirring up this little mountain town!

The Brewers Association (BA), the not-for-profit trade group dedicated to promoting and protecting America’s small and independent brewers, is pleased to announce its 2011 board of directors.
Following the member election, held last fall, the following new board members were elected: Stephen Hindy of Brooklyn Brewery, John Mallett of Bell’s Brewery, Inc., Eric Wallace of Left Hand Brewing Company and Steve Bradt of Freestate Brewing Company.
The BA board officers remain the same with Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery returning as Vice Chair, Mark Edelson of Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant returning as Secretary/Treasurer and Nick Matt of F.X. Matt Brewing Co. returning as Chair. Matt was elected by the board to serve an at-large term. Additionally Kim Jordan of New Belgium Brewing Company will serve on the Executive Commitee as a Past Board Chair.
“I am pleased to return as board chair to work with leaders from across the craft brewing industry, along with the staff of the Brewers Association,” said Nick Matt. “It is an honor to play a leadership role in helping the BA represent the interests of small brewers and the community of brewing enthusiasts.”
The Board provides strategic direction for the Brewers Association. With 37 full-time employees and additional independent contract staff, the Brewers Association serves 1,634 Brewery Members, 223 Wholesalers, 348 Allied Trade Members and 25,000+ American Homebrewers Association Members. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., easily one of my favorite breweries for a multitude of reasons, has yet another accolade to add to their repertoire of awards and achievements. This isn’t any regular old award and it’s not for brewing the best IPA or pale ale (both of which they do magnificently), it’s for something they continually challenge themselves and strive to do and it’s something that sets them apart from the rest of the industry. Sierra Nevada is being honored by the Environmental Protection Agency for their environmental stewardship and their continued efforts to conserve resources and focus on sustainable business practices, all while pioneering the way for other breweries and businesses to follow. They accomplish this through a variety of ways, to include one of the largest private solar panel arrays and fuel cell installations in the county, recycling, heat recovery, CO2 recovery, energy efficiency, water conservation, and an abundance of different methods, some of which are quite simple and others that are rather complex and expensive to accomplish … but this is something that Sierra Nevada feels very strongly about and it’s evident that the costs to them greatly outweighs the negative impacts done to the environment. On November 15, 1980 the first batch of Sierra Nevada beer made it through the brewhouse, helping to usher-in a new era of interesting, hand-crafted, and flavorful beer enjoyed around the world today.
With that said, today Sierra Nevada turns 30! You knew it was coming as Sierra Nevada has been releasing their 30th Anniversary beers over the last few months. A total of four beers were released, with the first three being collaborations of Ken Grossman of Sierra Nevada with pioneering brewers such as founder of the American Homebrewers Association Charlie Papazian, Fritz Maytag of Anchor Brewery, nationally renowned beer writer Fred Eckhardt, and Jack McAuliffe of the late (and first microbrewery) New Albion Brewery. The last beer of the series, Grand Cru, was done entirely in-house and celebrates the pioneering history and innovative spirit of Sierra Nevada and is a blend of oak-aged Bigfoot, Celebration Ale, and fresh Pale Ale and then it’s generously dry-hopped. Some beers are made more special by their rarity. These are the big imperial stouts, aged in even bigger bourbon barrels before finding their way into a very small number of bottles and sold for top-dollar. These are the beers for which people trade, stand in line, and sell their souls through blood-signed pacts.
And then there’s Sierra Nevada’s Celebration Ale.
Celebration is the antithesis of such beers. It is affordable, readily available, and the only line you’ll have to stand in to get it is that of your local grocery store — such is the far-reaching distribution of Celebration. For nearly 30 years, craft beer lovers have welcomed the cold winter months knowing that Celebration Ale would make them that much more tolerable.
