The Bruery Black Tuesday

It’s already all the rage on Twitter, Facebook, and just about everywhere else …but we felt compelled to mention it as well. Black Tuesday is back! Brewed by The Bruery out of Placentia, CA, Black Tuesday is their monster 20% ABV, pitch black imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels for over a year. Now in its second year, Black Tuesday was unleashed upon an unsuspecting world for the first time last year and took the beer world by storm. It was also a featured beer in Issue 8 of Mutineer Magazine. For the inaugural release, seekers of Black Tuesday would wait hours in line, offer their first born child for a bottle, or spend their entire paycheck to acquire one on eBay. Everyone was surprised, even those at The Bruery. Continue Reading »

HE'BREW Rejuwvenator Year-of-Grape Label

Shmaltz Brewing of San Francisco, California has announced its third “rejuvenation” of its annual celebration ale, Rejewvenator, in conjunction with their 14th year anniversary. The new Rejewvenator is brewed with Organic Concord grape juice and is described as a Half Dopplebock, Half Belgian style Dubbel hybrid lager / ale with 8.2% abv.

“The experimental process of brewing Rejewvenator begins with five specialty malts and five hop varieties blending European tradition with brazenly innovative American craft beer flavor and attitude. The brewers use Lager yeast to start cold, bottom fermentation then let the beer warm and pitch a hybrid Abbey/Trappist Belgian Ale yeast brought in exclusively for this brew. Finally Organic Concord Grape Juice gets infused into the fermenter. Rejewvenator then sits and ages for another month before centerfuge filtration and packaging.” Continue Reading »

Odell Brewing Double Pilsner

Odell Brewing is back at it again, this time with their 2008 World Beer Cup silver medal winning Double Pilsner in hand. “Double Pilsner is a tribute to the classic Bohemian Pilsner, and boasts a strong German pilsner malt profile. Munich malts and Caramalt are balanced by Saaz and whole flower Tettnanger hops,” according to Amanda Johnson of Odell.

Limited to 100 barrels, Double Pilsner will be available in a limited area of distribution and will be found in six packs with a suggested retail price of $10.99-11.99. And as with all limited release beers, once this beer is gone — it is gone for good.

Terrapin Beer Company Reunion 2010 Label

A Belgian and a Scotsman walk into a bar… ahhh the beginning to a very lame joke. But still, Belgian and Scotch – these are two words you rarely find in the same sentence, let alone the style description of a beer. It would be like labeling a wine as a “Bordeaux-style Tuscan.” Just seems weird.

All joking aside, Belgian-Style Scotch Ale, the fourth installment in the REUNION Beer series, is set to release later this month. For those of you who cannot wrap your heads around such a concept, let me break it down. Essentially, the beer is brewed using a Scotch Ale recipe, with 5 different malts, hopped with Kent Goldings, and then fermented at a high gravity using Trappist yeast (aka Belgian yeast). Scotch Ale, Belgian yeast. Got it? Continue Reading »

Odell Woodcut No 4

Odell Brewing is at it again with the release of the fourth beer in their Woodcut series, this time pushing the limits with a double marzen-style lager. With the first three beers of the Woodcut series being ales, it was time for them to do something different. “Our first three Woodcut offerings were fermented with ale yeasts. We wanted to stretch our innovation by creating a small batch strong lager” said Brendan McGivney, the head of production at Odell. According to the press release, Woodcut No. 4 is “best described as a double Märzenbier, boasts a clean malty body with a clean, refined finish. Hints of toasted cedar, vanilla, and almond are created by lagering the beer in new American Oak barrels.Continue Reading »

Firestone Walker Parabola Firestone Walker, the Mid-Size Brewing Company that won Champion Brewery in its category at the 2010 World Beer Cup, has continued their monstrous momentum as they prepare to release Parabola. A nearly fabled beer, you had to be at the right place at the right time to try this beer on tap or you had to be able to discern this beer from the other beers blended into what makes Firestone Walker’s acclaimed anniversary blends.

Number one in their new Proprietor’s Reserve Series, Parabola is a huge 13% Russian Imperial Stout that has been blended with previous vintages and then left to rest in bourbon barrels for a year. One can only guess what may follow Parabola in the series… Bravo? Abacus? Opal? Time will tell. But for now, it’s Parabola. Set to be released May 8th at the Firestone Walker Brewery and The Taproom Restaurant in Buellton, California, it will be limited to only 1,000 cases with a suggested price of $15.99 per 22 ounce bottle. As with their anniversary beers, this is a one time deal and will sell out quickly. Not only will it sell out quickly, but it will also be hard to find with those 1,000 cases being divided up between select accounts in 5 states and arriving around mid-May. Continue Reading »
