Budweiser's Designate a Driver Campaign

Alcohol consumption has a long history of coinciding with major sporting events. And typically, alcohol consumption increases around championship series and games. Budweiser has recognized this issue and, in honor of the 2010 World Cup, has created an ad campaign encouraging people to designate a driver. The ads will run until July 11th.

“Our new ‘Designate a Driver’ campaign is intended to bring our responsible drinking message to life during this time of excitement and celebration. Backed by significant resources, we’ll take our message to millions of consumers over the coming weeks.” – James Watson, marketing director at Budweiser Western Europe Continue Reading »

Global Action On Harmful Drinking

As part of a broader commitment to encourage responsible drinking and discourage excessive or irresponsible drinking, several of the biggest corporations in the alcohol beverage industry have joined forces with The International Center for Alcohol Policies (ICAP) to develop a website dedicated to helping reduce the harmful use of alcohol.

Global Action On Harmful Drinking has launched three main initiatives to address alcohol abuse, with an emphasis on low- and middle-income countries. Continue Reading »

Y Drive

If you’ve been following the Mutineer blog for some time, you’ll know how much I despise drunk driving. The good news is that “Y Drive LA” might just be the perfect solution to the drunk driving problems that plague LA. The idea is pretty crazy, but it works: you get wasted at your office holiday party, you call “Y Drive LA”, and a person shows up to drive you home in your car. BRILLIANT! But wait, what happens when you are dropped off at your house in your car? How does the chauffeur get home? Well, your driver has cleverly stowed a motor scooter in your trunk and will scoot off to his next job.

Sounds expensive, right? Nope. Prices for central areas range from $38 to $45, which may be a bit more than a taxi, but you have to consider that now you don’t have to go retrieve your car in the morning, which is a hell of a trade off.

I love this idea and applaud the fine people at Y Drive LA for addressing the drunk driving problem in LA in such a positive and practical way.

7 Time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher has teamed up with mixologist Salvatore “The Maestro” Calabrese to show just how difficult it is to mix cocktails in the car. This anti-drinking and driving campaign is pretty awesome, even if it hates America and Canada.

Motorized La-Z-Boy

If you have been reading the Mutineer Blog for awhile, you know how much I hate drunk driving. It’s the most idiotic, selfish, dangerous, preventable thing a person can do. That said, when I saw in the news that a man had plead guilty to DWI after crashing his motorized lazy boy chair into a parked car, I had to let out a little chuckle.

According to Yahoo! News:

Prosecutors say Anderson’s blood alcohol content was 0.29, more than three times the legal limit, when he crashed into a parked vehicle in August 2008. He was not seriously injured.

Police said the chair was powered by a converted lawnmower and had a stereo and cup holders.

A motorized lazy boy with a stereo and cup holders? It’s clear that this guy’s motivation was simply to impress the ladies. And the moral of the story is that had he just called a cab, he probably would’ve been successful.

HELP University College in Malaysia has created art which was displayed in high-traffic locations in Kuala Lumpur, according to AdAge. The article also says that Malaysian young people “have a tendency to feel fearless and invincible”. Enter the car wreck/death chair art, which bears the message “Drink and drive and you might live to suffer the consequences.” This is a very cool effort to remind people of the dangers of drunk driving, and I know I posted about this same subject over the weekend, but it’s really important, and I’m prepared to dismantle the leased Mutineer Passat and turn it into a Mad Max death chair to prove my point.

Mutineer Magazine is on a one-way mission to bring fine beverage culture into the mainstream, and people driving cars into minivans full of kids make that tragically difficult to do. So be an upstanding Mutineer and NEVER drink and drive.

With a big 4th of July weekend upon us, remember to PLEASE don’t drink and drive. I know that you know that drinking and driving is a terrible idea, but so does everyone else, yet DUI’s continue to happen.

Last night, Phoenix Mercury guard and the WNBA’s biggest star, Diana Taurasi, was cited for DUI last night after a game…STUPID.

Two nights ago, legendary wrestler “Rowdy” Roddy Piper was busted for DUI in Hollywood…STUPID

As you read this, NFL receiver Dante Stallworth is sitting in jail for DUI manslaughter…he drank, he drove, and he ran over a guy with his Bentley…KILLING HIM. Stallworth was well above the legal limit for blood alcohol content, and this is simply tragically STUPID.

I hate to be a downer, but as simple as this concept seems, people still don’t seem to get it. Please don’t drink and drive this weekend, but please drink and have a good time.

99.9% of the time, spitting is a bad thing. I recall spitting on the track in high school, and the gym teacher made me scoop up the dirt and do push-ups. If you want to start a bar fight, spit in some dudes face and it’s game on for sure.

HOWEVER, in wine, spitting is a crucial tool to avoid DUI’s, drunk dials, and fist fights that could start for a myriad of reasons beyond spitting in someone’s face (like getting crazy with someone’s girlfriend in a bar…sorry TK). Continue Reading »
