This May dozens of San Francisco’s top bartenders threw 22 events hosted in 20 bars over eight days, which were attended by droves of thirsty people. This was the third year of San Francisco Cocktail Week and the event continues to grow.
The celebration was anchored by large cocktail parties at the beginning and end of the week. In between were the United States Bartenders’ Guild National Mixology Contest, a happy hour social beneath the Bay Bridge, and a farmer’s market cocktail event where the city’s best bartenders sliced, diced, muddled and juiced California’s fresh produce into equally fresh cocktails. Our Energyologist Jeff is very into the 14 different flavors of Three Olives Vodka, and has been after me to blog about them for some time. Three Olives got started in 1998 and now offer drinkers a wide array of flavors using their English distilled vodka. Here is a run down of the flavors currently available as well as some official Three Olives recipes to go with them.
These recipes are all pretty simple, and Jeff suggests you get creative in how you mix the flavored vodka into cocktails. We’ll start things off with his signature cocktail:
Energyologist Jeff’s “Door and Bush” Cocktail
1 1/2 oz. Three-O Triple Shot Espresso Vodka
1/2 oz. Three-O Vanilla Vodka
4 oz. Java Monster Mean Bean Energy Drink
No Garnish.
And for the 14 Cocktails Using 14 Flavors: Continue Reading »

The fine people at Dos Lunas Tequila sent me a sample of their silver tequila, and I must say it is quite delicious. I’m waiting to try the Anejo and Reposado versions before I write too much about the tequila itself. My contact at “DLT” told me to check out some worthwhile cocktail recipes on the Dos Lunas site, which I can only describe as America: The Website. Imagine a marriage of America and Flash graphics taken way too far, coupled with shredding Guitar Hero music, all leading up to a silhouette of a wolf howling at the moon, and you can start to grasp the epic-ness of this website. If I was in charge of the website I’d keep the America theme, but make the music Ennio Morricone’s The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, and instead of a wolf howling at the moon, I’d have an intense video of a wolf battling a grizzly bear for forest turf. Yes, that is how I would do the website. Did I mention that Dos Lunas is the Official Tequila of the Miami Dolphins? Yes, these people are for real. Continue Reading »

This is one of my favorite movies ever. Bill Murray plays Phil Connors, a weatherman and continual a-hole with contempt for everything and everyone. Connors is forced to relive the same day in the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania over and over. In an attempt to score with his producer Phil is forced to drink sweet vermouth on the rocks with a twist, her favorite drink and a cocktail he obviously detests. According to the director Harold Ramis, Phil has to relive the day for about ten years. So here is a tribute to the ten years of Phil’s imbibing his most repudiated drink. Continue Reading »

The classic Rob Roy is a cocktail of scotch, sweet vermouth, and a dash of bitters with a maraschino cherry as garnish. The origins of this cocktail are shrouded in mystery, mainly because no one really knows where or who invented the thing. Some say that the drink is named after the Scottish folk hero Robert Roy Macgregor, others tell that when Dewar’s Scotch Whiskey was introduced to New York an opera by the name Rob Roy had just opened and prompted the drink to be named such. Regardless, the drink is now part of American culture and has a few variations depending on the taste of the drinker. Continue Reading »
