Four Loko, the controversial once-caffeinated flavored malt beverage that was blamed to have hospitalized college students from around the country, has just announced the release of Poco Loko. The drink, now caffeine-free due to an FDA ban, will be available in 16-ounce cans instead of 23.5-ounce cans found with Four Loko and at a strength of 8 percent alcohol by volume, instead of the normal 12 percent. The product, which will be available in four packs and in single cans, is being introduced in order to meet consumer demand for additional products and flavors, and to continue diversifying the Phusion Projects line of products.
“We’ve always been a company that listens to what our consumers want,” said Chris Hunter, one of the co-founders of Phusion Projects. “Poco Loko is a great product to bring to market, and we’re excited to re-introduce fan favorite Green Apple, originally from the Four Loko XXX Limited Edition line.”
As with all Phusion Projects products, Poco Loko is a flavored malt beverage that does not contain caffeine, guarana or taurine.
I think very little needs to be said about this. It’s pretty clear that this video was made in hopes that it would go viral. It’s been viewed almost 370,000 times so as of yet, it seems they haven’t gotten the attention they may have imagined. However, it is slightly entertaining to watch this lady freak out, all in the name of Vital Energy energy drink. I haven’t tried or even heard of Vital Energy, I’ll have to speak with resident Mutineer Energyologist Jeff Dorenbush to get the skinny on the caffeine fueled beverage.
In addition to all the fine beverage news we posted on our blog this week, several other noteworthy things happened over the past few days. We have summarized them into a weekly roundup:
FDA Warning Letters Issues To Four Makers Of Caffeinated Alcoholic Beverages
“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today warned four companies that the caffeine added to their malt alcoholic beverages is an “unsafe food additive” and said that further action, including seizure of their products, is possible under federal law.”

Recently, there has been much concern in the California craft beer industry that a new state Assembly Bill will prohibit brewers from using coffee in the brewing process.
The bill would prohibit the import, production, manufacture, distribution, or sale of caffeinated malt beverages, as defined, at retail locations within the state. This means that beverage institutions would not only be prohibited from making caffeinated malt beverages, they would be completely banned from even entering the state. Continue Reading »
“Hyper Glow” is a fictional beer that had me very pumped up until I realized that it doesn’t exist, and is was instead an April Fools Day joke. The explanation for the beer is simple:
“…our in staff beer chemists took the finest India Pale Ale (brewed with the choicest hops from Belgium farms), carefully added 220 milligrams of caffeine per sixteen ounce bottle, and, through a patent pending process known as ‘Glow Stuff Insertion’, they then inserted glow stuff. The result is a stimulating depressant which looks like runoff from Three Mile Island but tastes just like beer with caffeine and glow stuff in it!” Continue Reading »
The Mutineer Magazine Launch Party hosted by Paso Creek saw a host of distilled spirits. Everything from Maker’s Mark, Vicious Vodka, Obsello Absinthe, Chivas Regal and Tequila Comisario, graced the tables as guests made their way around the venue.
Vicious Vodka
Premium caffeine infused Vicious Vodka kept everyone on his or her toes while providing the perfect spirit to mix with Red Bull and really take it up a notch. Continue Reading »
In the second of my non-alcoholic blog trifecta (cocaine isn’t alcohol people!), Pepsi is still trying to shoot down rumors that Pepsi released patriotic themed cans of cola after September 11. Ironically enough, I heard about this on Pepsi’s website, under the “false rumor alert” tab in the company section of the website. Does Pepsi have to refute so many rumors that is has a dedicated section of the website for it? Can I sign up for Pepsi “false rumor alert” RSS feed and get up to the minute false rumors delivered to my iPhone? Weirder yet, the rumors stem from as far back as 2001, yet for some reason are still being publicized on Pepsi’s site. Continue Reading »
Time Magazine is reporting that Red Bull Cola contains cocaine.
Really?
“The [Health Institute in the state of North Rhine Westphalia] examined Red Bull Cola in an elaborate chemical process and found traces of cocaine.” Continue Reading »
