Mutineer Interview with Gary Vaynerchuk


Do you have a “go to” cocktail?

No. I barely consume any liquor.

Why?

I don’t know. I didn’t drink in high school, I was never drawn to that. I’ve probably consumed less than a 1.7 liter bottle of liquor globally in my life.

So you just never developed an interest to explore liquor?

I’ve tasted a lot of scotch, but I’ve drank very little vodka. Mostly I’ve drank single-malts. I like tequila, I just don’t consume it.

Do you have a signature hangover cure?

Coke, with lemon and lime, but I’ve only been drunk two or three times in my life.

What is the most exciting sparkling wine region outside of Champagne for you right now?

Cava.

You constantly reference pop culture on Wine Library TV. What are some of your biggest influences?

I think just living it. I think if you were a baby of the 80’s, you had so much pop culture, you know? I am very pop cultured out. I love the VHI 80’s specials, I’ll watch that stuff for days. I love watching Best Week Ever. I love culture, I love people. I love what makes people tick. I’ve built businesses based around understanding how people tick, and so understanding pop culture is important because that is a preview of what people react to.

While Mutineer Magazine is based in Los Angeles, I’m a Washington state native, and on December 28, your New York Jets visit my Seattle Seahawks. Predictions?

41-7 Jets. I’m going to that game by the way.

Have you been to Qwest Field?

I actually taped an episode of Wine Library TV at Qwest Field. You gotta Google that.

And finally, suppose Brett Favre leads your New York Jets to a Super Bowl victory. How do you celebrate?

I go into an absolute coma. There is no doubt in my mind that I wouldn’t drink anything, I wouldn’t eat anything, I would fundamentally lose my mind and black out.

I would probably go with something high-acid and white like an Albariño.

I’ve had a weird situation where I’ve liked inexpensive Prosecco wines with chips and salsa.

Brunello di Montalcino
A hefty Brunello. A hot vintage Brunello like 2003 where it’s a little bit more New World-ized.

Cheddar Tuna Melt
New Zealand Syrah
I love the beautiful mix between the Rhone Valley and New World in New Zealand Syrahs.

Fried Chicken
California Zinfandel
I drink enormous amounts of California Zinfandel with fried chicken.

Buffalo Wings
South France Rhone Blends (or Root Beer)
I used to drink a lot of Languedoc and Provence Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre blends with chicken wings.

Spaghetti
Barbera d’Alba
I would never say Chianti. I’d probably go with Barbera d’Alba.

Raw Veggies and Dip
South African Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc from New Zeal…um, Chenin Blanc from South Africa. Ya, Chenin Blanc from South Africa.

Cheeseburger
California Cabernet Sauvignon
I’d probably have a California Cabernet from Santa Cruz Mountains.
