Tales of the Cocktail is right around the corner and the 2013 Tales of the Cocktail Official Cocktail Competition has begun. Mutineer is pleased to have once again teamed up with Tales to sponsor this competition. This year’s theme is the Rickey cocktail, which bartenders are invited to make their own version of in hopes of it being crowned the official cocktail of the 2013 Tales of the Cocktail.
The Rickey dates back to the late 1800’s when George A. Williamson, a bartender at Shoomaker’s bar in Washington, D.C., would combine a base spirit with half a lime and sparkling mineral water for a Democratic lobbyist named Colonel Joseph Kyle Rickey. To encourage creativity in reinterpreting this classic drink, the guidelines for the competition are pretty loose. Any base spirit and any type of citrus is allowed, it just must be defined by three overarching characteristics:
1. It must be tart
2. It must have a carbonated element
3. It must be refreshing
“What makes the Rickey such a great drink, besides being so refreshing, is that it’s so simple. Spirit, lime, soda. Toss the shell in and go. That means it’s not only easy to make but open to endless possibilities,” said Derek Brown, owner of the Columbia Room in Washington, D.C. “Bartenders have their work cut out for them in this contest. It takes skill to add to such a straightforward drink and yet retain its original character.”
Among other prizes, the winner of the competition will be featured in Mutineer Magazine. Recipes must be in by April 24. For full rules and details, visit Tales of the Cocktail.

Emily G’s out of Georgia came up with this exciting rendition of this infamous cocktail, using their delicious Strawberry Pineapple Jam in place of passion fruit juice, which is often added to a Hurricane for a fruity punch of flavor. There are a lot of variations of the Hurricane out there, but I am betting not many of them list jam as an ingredient. See the full post »
Mutineer Magazine has set sail with Captain Morgan in an online promotion that pits Mutineer Magazine against nine other lifestyle websites. Luckily, participating is easy and your help may earn you some booty.
Over the next three Mondays, Mutineer will post a “Perfect Getaway” episode and a clue. Answers to the clue will be found by watching the episode. After you have have found the answer, post it in the comments section on the blog (and only the blog!) and that’s it! Commenters who guess the correct answer will be randomly selected for prizes like subscriptions to Mutineer, Captain Morgan swag, sporting event tickets, iPads, and more, and the websites with the most correct answers each week will get more prizes to give away.
Luckily, the episodes are entertaining and action packed, put together by an award winning crew and a soundtrack by the Dropkick Murphys.

As you may know Mutineer Magazine is running a Kickstarter project right now, and we have been fortunate enough to learn about some cool beverage related projects at the same time. One project we have fallen in love with is the Cocktail Cult – Free Spirited Cocktails & Pure Spirited Women by Kiki Braverman, founder of Pür Spirits. Kiki and her business partners are creating a book celebrating the ladies of the cocktail scene in San Francisco and beyond. The book contains glamorous images, delicious cocktails and stories in one beautiful book.
They have reached their goal, but every dollar over goes towards compensating the photographer Kelly Puleio. Check out this amazing project, and order a piece of cocktail art.
To celebrate the book, Kiki Braverman supplied us with this delicious recipe using Pür Spirits.

1 oz. pür•likör blossom, elderflower liqueur
1/2 oz. St. George Dry Rye Gin
1/2 oz. Sherry
1/4 oz. fresh squeezed ruby grape fruit juice
fresh fennel, sliced
Muddle fennel in a mixing glass. Add all ingredients and stir over ice. Strain into an old fashioned glass. Garnish with fennel leaves.
As you may know Mutineer Magazine is running a Kickstarter project right now, and we have been fortunate enough to learn about some cool beverage related projects at the same time. We discovered RX Bitters Co. when co-owner Brett Winfield backed Drink Careers 101. I checked out their project and found that he and his partners Ryan and Eric had some tasty ideas about cocktails. Their bitters come in Sarsaparilla, Cherry Apple and Aromatic #7. I know I am looking forward to receiving my bottle of Sarsaparilla bitters.
The RX Bitters Co. has already reached their goal, but they still need to hit their stretch goals. If they hit $12,000 they will put Smoked Peach, Smoked Pineapple and Smoked Apple into production. If they reach $15,000 they will put Whiskey and Wine Barrel Aged Bitters into production. I think that sounds like a tasty incentive.
Brett shared the following recipe with us so you’ll know how to use your rewards from backing the RX Bitters Co. project. Here is what he had to say:
“I like an Old Fashioned made with Auchentoshan classic, which is a really beautiful triple distilled single malt Scotch that really makes our bitters shine. It is elegance in simplicity.”
Add The Rx Bitters Co. Sarsaparilla Bitters to the sugar cube in an old fashioned glass and muddle to a fine paste. Add the Auchentoshan Classic and ice, preferably large cubes, stir for five seconds, Garnish with an orange and lemon peel and you are good to go.
