Mutineer Magazine announces the addition of a new recurring column called “Inspired Beverage Voices,” created to celebrate regional innovators in the world of fine beverage culture. Each issue will now explore a different area, highlighting individuals working with local libations in inspired, new ways. With the support of No.3 Gin, the inaugural feature on Napa Valley will appear in the November 2011 edition and will introduce the nation to the new and innovative voices of TouteSuite Social Club, with Susan Quinn and Didier Loustau, Christophe Smith of Harvest Live, and Laura Levesque Page of The Healthy Junkie.

“It’s been said that a culture is defined by its articulate voices, so we couldn’t be more excited to highlight these new and inspired voices in beverage culture, beginning with Napa Valley,” says Mutineer Editor in Chief and Publisher Alan Kropf.

Today we celebrate the third and last of our Inspired Beverage Voices.

Laura Levesque Page R.H.N., a.k.a. The Healthy Junkie, beat three cancer diagnoses in her early ‘20s by turning away from drastic surgical methods and embracing the natural healing power of a healthy diet and lifestyle. “For me, health is simple: eat more vegetables,” she says. Her recipe for good health includes lots of beverages inspired by leafy greens and fresh juices, which she shares on her website and via Twitter. She also uses her wellness-centered blog, workshops and personal life coaching to inspire others to make better lifestyle choices.

Today we celebrate the second of our Inspired Beverage Voices.

Christophe Smith is the founder of Harvest Live, an online portal that allows any person with a mobile device to experience a vineyard harvest and grape crush as it happens, without leaving the comfort of home. Inspired by all the “really cool stuff in Napa Valley that the consumer never gets a chance to see,” Smith’s creation uses an online streaming format that lets participants ask questions via moderated chat room or Twitter, and gives people all over the world a glimpse behind the scenes of a Napa Valley grape harvest. Archive footage is also available year-round on their website.

Today we celebrate the first of our Inspired Beverage Voices.

Quinn and Loustau are the cofounders of ToutSuite Social Club, an innovative online video platform that is changing the way conversation happens between consumers and tastemakers. ToutSuite Social Club members can engage in a real-time, round table dialogue with their favorite product makers, while also connecting with fellow ToutSuite members around the world. Thanks to their headquarters in the Napa Valley, Quinn and Loustau have been able to sit down with the region’s winemakers and beverage artisans for irreverent personal interviews and panel discussions, with a long-term vision to cover a range of product categories on a regular basis.
Even with people being tired of that monopoly and wanting privatization, many didn’t agree with the manner in which I-1100 and I-1105 proposed it be done, which is why it may not have passed. Washington Governor Chris Gregoire herself was opposed to both I-1100 and I-1105, but she went on to say “Do I think that we should reform liquor? Yes. And I would expect the legislature to pick up where the voters left off and still do something important in that area.”

With that said, sponsors for Initiative 1183 announced today that they estimated they turned in nearly 350,000 signatures to qualify the the new liquor privatization initiative for the November ballot. According to The Seattle Times, “I-1183 would close state liquor stores and sell their assets, including the liquor-distribution center. It would allow private stores to sell liquor and create licensing fees for sale and distribution of liquor based on sales revenues. Costco is the main backer, providing most of the more than $950,000 in cash and in-kind contributions raised so far.” Like last year’s Costco Wholesale Corp. backed I-1100, Costco is promoting I-1183 along with the Washington Restaurant Association, the Northwest Grocery Association and the Washington Retail Association.

As with last year, a group called Protect Our Communities will campaign against the measure and they will use scare tactics and false figures of how readily attainable hard liquor will be for minors and the increased amount of drunk drivers on the road. I’m already looking forward to their campaigns …

Mutineer will be watching this one with interest. Stay tuned.

Founded in 2006, Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction is an artist collective that takes its name from Walter Benjamin’s landmark 1935 essay. They sell a lot of random things from handcrafted soap to clothing to jewelry, but they also produce two really cool liquors, ROOT and SNAP, both of which are certified USDA organic. ROOT is a pre-temperance alcoholic Root Tea and SNAP is a spirit distilled from the ingredients traditionally used to make ginger snap cookies. Both also have really cool stories and I urge you to check out their website and watch the videos they’ve created for each of them.

I stumbled upon the above video of building a terrarium with the bottle you’re left with after enjoying the delicious ROOT and wanted to share it as I think it’s a cool concept and they do a really nice job on all the videos they create to promote their products. If you aren’t interested in building a terrarium, you might at least find the video entertaining. If you do plan on making a terrarium with your empty ROOT bottle or any other bottle, be sure to check out the ROOT website for directions and tips on how to do it correctly.

Note: Please also consider the environment and local laws pertaining to wildlife conservation or property rights when harvesting plant life for your terrariums. While it may be tempting to harvest mature mosses or ferns from state parks or other wooded areas, not only may it be illegal, but the delicate ecosystems required to sustain them are not easily recreated in a bottle.

A couple of weeks ago our motley crew of Mutineers from Washington to Virginia descended upon Murphys, California for the first annual Mutineer Magazine Staff Retreat. We tasted wine, played bocce and strengthened bonds over long meals and forty-two year old Scotch. It was a great weekend and I am excited to share some of it here with you.

The Aphrodisiac cocktail, an intoxicating blend of sparkling wine, hibiscus, coriander, anise and ginger from Mineral.

Some fellow Mutineers have been living in Murphys since last September. If I’ve heard about one thing since they arrived, it has been the vegatarian restaurant Mineral. The thing that intrigued me about this restaurant is that only one of the guys is vegetarian and yet, they all rave about it. I knew that if a group of bacon loving young men loved this place, than it must be somewhere worth checking out. On our last day in Murphys, my Editor in Chief Alan set up lunch for me, Phil our designer Julie and her boyfriend Ryan. I have to tell you, that this is one of the best meals I have ever had the pleasure to sit down to.

Also, this is not a review, simply an account of one incredible lunch.

The Cherry Bombs were my second favorite dish of the meal. I can’t find a proper description, but as far as I could tell it is chile and cheese that has been battered, fried, topped with a cherry and served with balsamic jam. That description seems too simple. I feel like something as vibrant and exciting as this was deserves to be written about with neon and punctuated with sparklers.

The cheese and cracker plate consisted of delicious thin toasts served with Bellwether Farms Crescenza, olive oil and olive dust. It was creamy with lovely bitter olive notes and the toasts had a pleasing snap.

This Kumquat Sparkler was just delicious. I wish I knew what was in it, because I think I’d like to make it at home.

This was the Peach Palm Salad and the first time Chef Steve messed with my mind. It looks like scallops, but is really hearts of palm, avocado, pickled radishes, “dirt” and Sriracha agave vinaigrette. It was tangy, sweet and spicy with a wonderful texture. I thoroughly enjoyed this.

I don’t have a proper description for this pizza, but it had smoked potato and cauliflower which completely blew my mind. Visually they looked like meat and the seasoning and smoke gave it a very meaty quality. It also had cabbage, herbs and a runny egg making for one incredible pizza.

I don’t think I can properly communicate to you how utterly delicious this veggie burger was. I think it just might be one of the most incredible things I have ever eaten. It is a handmade veggie burger with garlic aioli, shaved red onions, queso panela, napa cabbage and served on a house made bun with house made sea salt potato chips and little pickles. If you’ll notice, the patty looks like meat. When Chef Steve cooked the patties, they seared and browned like meat. When I bit into it, it gave me the satisfaction I get when biting into a beef burger, but was ten times better. This is one of those dishes that will torment me for a long time. I wonder if Phil will be up to making the trek to Murphys anytime soon?

My thanks to Steve and Maya for an incredible lunch.

Look for Mineral inspired dishes in the weeks to come!

Note: In the spirit of honesty, this meal was comped, but I can assure you it is 100% worthy of the high praise I have given it.
