Our friends at Wine & Spirits Magazine are hosting their 11th Annual Top 100 Tasting Event in San Francisco next week and we couldn’t be more psyched for this event. At the event you can taste highly acclaimed wines from the Top 100 Wineries of the Year and meet the winemakers behind these amazing wines. Feast on delicious bites from Wine & Spirits’ New & Notable Bay Area restaurants and enjoy fresh oysters, local cheeses and an array of artisan specialties – all paired with the top wines of the year. The evening also includes fresh oysters from Hog Island and an array of artisan specialties from Adesso, Baia Pasta, Olive This Olive That, Point Reyes Cheese, Scala’s Bistro, Song Tea, Sour Flour and XOX Truffles. Even better, the event is an annual benefit for San Francisco Baykeeper so you know your entrance fee is going to a great cause.

Just One Shift: Bartenders Worldwide Unite from May 12th-18th to Raise Money for Wine to Water

Just One Shift

Renowned bartender gaz regan has recently announced the return of Just One Shift. The campaign’s goal is to raise $100,000 during a one week span with all proceeds benefiting Wine to Water. The charity campaign is simple: bartenders from around the world are invited to donate their tips from just one of their shifts during the week of May 12-18th.

The 2014 program will take place Monday, May 12 through Sunday, May 18; the first shift kicks off at 7 p.m. on May 12th at The Dead Rabbit in NYC’s Financial District where gaz will be a special guest bartender. All earnings are given to Wine to Water, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded by Doc Hendley, ex-bartender and CNN Hero from North Carolina.

According to to Just One Shift, “In 2013, its inaugural year, 327 bartenders in 34 countries participated, raising $40,000. The charity reports this amount can save 40,000 people from death due to water-borne illness for a full year. Specifically in Uganda, $40,000 can provide 10,000 people with clean water for 10 years.”

What will gaz do if the $100,000 goal is reached? “Bartenders can change the world and last year’s success has proved it. If we meet this year’s goal I will shave my head.”

Cocktails of the James Beard Awards

On Monday, the James Beard Foundation announced their 2014 winners of the coveted James Beard Awards. For those who missed the winners, we’ll post those that pertain the beverage world below. But first, what cocktails were attendees drinking? Here are two of the cocktails.

Bacardi Old Cuban

1.5 oz. Bacardi 8 Anõs
2 dashes bitters
.5 oz. lime juice
1 oz. simple syrup
6 whole leaves mint
2.25 oz. Champagne

Muddle lime juice, syrup, mint in a mixing glass. Add rum, bitters, ice and shake well. Strain into cocktail glass, and top with champagne.

Bacardi Old Fashioned

2 oz. Bacardi 8 Anõs
2 dashes Bitters
.5 oz. water
1 tsp. sugar
1 orange peel

Mix sugar, water and Angostura bitters in an old-fashioned glass. Combine with bar spoon or muddler. Pour in BACARDÍ 8 Anõs, fill with ice cubes, and stir repeatedly.

The Spirit of Italy, a group of eight iconic Italian distilleries with the common goal of promoting Italy’s premium spirits, will begin a short West Coast tour on December 4. With stops in San Francisco and Las Vegas, The Spirit of Italy will host bartenders for an in-depth class on the spirits and liqueurs held in the portfolio and will be led by world renowned Mixologist Francesco Lafranconi and alongside the owners of the brands themselves.

Los Angeles’ Brittini Rae Wins 2013 Luxardo Cocktail Cup


Brittini Rae, 2013 Luxardo Cocktail Cup Champion

Finalists from around the country competed at San Francisco’s historic Anchor Brewery last night, all vying to be crowned 2013 Luxardo Cocktail Cup champion. Now in its second year, the competition asks competitors to create an original Luxardo cocktail that is not only delicious, but one that reflects an aspect of the heritage of the city they are representing.

We are proud to announce that Brittini Rae of Los Angeles’ Goldie’s is the 2013 Luxardo Cocktail Cup Champion. With her win, she will be visiting Luxardo in Italy next year.

Below is her winning cocktail recipe.

California Aurora
by Brittini Rae, Goldie’s

Cocktail Ingredients:
5-6 Fresh Sage Leaves
1/2 oz honey syrup*
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz Luxardo Apricot Liqueur
1 1/2 oz Luxardo Aperitivo
4 Drops California Poppy Oil
Top Anchor California Lager

Preparation Instructions:
In a small tin lightly press the sage, add all other ingredients except the lager. Add ice, shake, strain into an ice filled collins glass. Top with Anchor California Lager and garnish with a California Poppy Flower and sage leaves.

*Honey syrup is made with California Wildflower honey, using a 2:1 (honey:water) ratio
