Event Recap: Vintage Hollywood 2011

Thu, Jul 14 |

Vintage Hollywood

Did I tell you I used to be a foster care social worker? No? That’s so strange; I thought we had no secrets…

Anyway. Having spent untold hours working to improve out-of-home care for anywhere between 300-500 Los Angeles youth, there are certain organizations that hold a particularly soft place in my heart. Ocean Park Community Center (OPCC) is one of those organizations.

From the OPCC website:

OPCC (Ocean Park Community Center) is the largest and most comprehensive provider of housing and services on the Westside to low-income and homeless youth, adults and families, battered women and their children, and people living with mental illness, particularly homeless mentally ill women.  OPCC currently operates 257 emergency and transitional beds in six facilities, and has over 150 individuals living in apartments throughout the region with rental subsidy vouchers obtained by OPCC.

You can imagine how thrilled I was, then, to accept an invitation to the 2011 Vintage Hollywood charity event on June 11 – a major fund-raising gala for OPCC.

Held at the private home of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Kouba, the grassy lot adjacent to the house was spotted with white lanterns and seating, and ringed with tables offering star-quality wine and food, like oysters from Blue Plate Oysterette and Oyster Gourmet; Waterloo & City’s foie gras chicken liver mousse; Mozza’s burrata and pesto with roasted tomato; steak tartare from Bouchon; and desserts from Valerie Confections, Florentino Ice Cream and simplethings. There were only 350 tickets available, so securing the best from the attending 22 wineries and 19 restaurants wasn’t much of a problem. For these perks, guests paid anywhere from $250 (for an individual ticket) to $25,000 (at the “Vineyard Sponsorship” level). In-between, celebrities such as Ben and Christine Stiller, Courtney Cox and David Arquette, Marcia Cross and Thomas Mahoney joined an assortment of donors – from banks to private philanthropists – to support OPCC’s cause.

Again, from the website:

Since 2002, the Vintage Hollywood event has raised more than $1,100,000 to benefit organizations including Children’s Action Network, JDRF, Save the Children and United Friends of Children.

A food and wine event, benefiting one of my champion charities? For me, there couldn’t have been a better pairing.

Mutineer Magazine on Showtime’s “The Big C”

Tue, Jun 28 |

Mutineer Magazine on "The Big C"

This is what I’m talkin’ about. Mutineer Magazine has permeated the very fabric of the modern American experience, available not only in bookstores, fine beverage establishments, and on millennial hipster coffee tables, but also in your local faux oncology clinic, as seen here in a recent episode of “The Big C” on Showtime. I’ve never seen the show as I only watch Three Sheets and apocalyptic documentaries, so I must rely on my fellow fine beverage patriots to be on the lookout for stuff like this. Huge props to Mutineers Stephanie and Gretchen on Facebook for bringing this to our attention and RichardPF on Twitter.

Cognac Conversations with Ben, Daryl & Alan

Thu, Jun 2 |

Cognac. You know it and love it, and now you can witness Mutineer Editor in Chief Alan Kropf attempt to educate stand-up comedians Ben Morrison (who also happens to be a regular Mutineer contributor and host of the Mutineer Comedy Festival) and Daryl Wright (also a Mutineer Comedy Festival performer) at the world renowned Jon Lovitz Comedy Club at Universal City.

Mutineer Magazine Columnist Dan Dunn on Conan O’Brien

Fri, May 27 |

Regular Mutineer Magazine columnist Dan Dunn and author of the new book Living Loaded was recently on on the Conan O’Brien Show where Dan showed Conan how to make some Cinco de Mayo cocktails using Hornitos Tequila. Though Conan’s “cocktail” was pretty much just a lot bell pepper and a lot of tequila, the drink itself was bell Jalapeno-infused Hornitos tequila, bell pepper, celery bitters, pineapple juice, lime juice, a dash of hot sauce and shaken with ice and strained into a salt-rimmed shot glass .. and in Conan’s case, more tequila .. and then, more tequila.

The next drink would be rimmed with maple syrup and bacon and then a shot of Hornitos Añejo tequila

Kara’s Cupcakes at the Mutineer Magazine Holiday Comedy Festival

Wed, Dec 8 |

Kara's Cupcakes

I know you must be sitting there wondering how we could possibly make an evening of fine beverage, amazing comedians and helping children even better, but we’ve done it. The wonderful people of Kara’s Cupcakes have just agreed to set up shop at the Mutineer Magazine Holiday Comedy Festival and we are so pleased to have them join us.

We Mutineers are all pretty excited about this turn of events so don’t be surprised to see us lining up to buy one of Kara’s adorable little treats. I am personally looking forward to their vanilla cupcake with sweet Madagascar bourbon vanilla frosting. And, I have it on good authority that our fearless Editor in Chief is excited to have a coconut cupcake, having seen him thoroughly devour enjoying one at the Oxbow Market in Napa recently.

Cochon Volant Flying Pig BBQ

This weekend the food trucks (and trailers and vans) are pulling out all the stops at the Mutineer Magazine Holiday Comedy Festival. We are happy to announce that Cochon Volant (Flying Pig!) Barbecue will be joining us. Owner and chef Rob Larman will be serving up barbecued pork and brisket sliders from his flying pig smoker for your dining pleasure.

The trucks will open for business at 7:00pm Saturday, so be sure to get there in time to grab an amazing (and cheap) dinner at the trucks before the show starts. I know I will!
