Men’s Health Attacks Craft Beer

Men's Health - 20 Worst Drinks in America 2010

In a recent article [20 Worst Drinks in America 2010], Men’s Health made the outlandish claim that “Americans have developed a severe drinking problem.” And by drinking problem, they are not referring to alcohol abuse. Oh no. Men’s Health is lashing out on beverages across the entire spectrum — from waters, to sodas, to beers. The argument is that Americans consume a damaging amount of “empty calories” from what Men’s Health considers to be unhealthy beverages. See the full post »

Odell releases Woodcut No. 4

Beer

Odell Woodcut No 4

Odell Brewing is at it again with the release of the fourth beer in their Woodcut series, this time pushing the limits with a double marzen-style lager. With the first three beers of the Woodcut series being ales, it was time for them to do something different. “Our first three Woodcut offerings were fermented with ale yeasts. We wanted to stretch our innovation by creating a small batch strong lager” said Brendan McGivney, the head of production at Odell. According to the press release, Woodcut No. 4 is “best described as a double Märzenbier, boasts a clean malty body with a clean, refined finish. Hints of toasted cedar, vanilla, and almond are created by lagering the beer in new American Oak barrels.See the full post »

Firestone Walker Dinner at Collins Pub #SBW2010

SBW2010 Firestone Walker Dinner

As avid readers of the Mutineer blog, you all should know of the greatness currently going on that is Seattle Beer Week (American Craft Beer week started today as well). I was lucky enough to be in Seattle to catch the very beginning of #SBW2010 and I had the pleasure of attending a few events, one of them being the Firestone Walker Brewer’s Dinner at Collins Pub. It was originally planned to be hosted by Firestone Walker’s Brewmaster extraordinaire Matt Brynildson but for one reason or another it ended up being hosted by Firestone Walker Proprietor David Walker, which was a real treat as well. David was very friendly and outgoing as he talked about each beer and the story behind it and in between courses he made his way around the intimate dinner of 50 or so people and talked with everyone. Pretty cool. He wasn’t shy either with bringing out some insane beers that I can’t believe I had a chance to try. The food deserves mention as well as it was delicious and incredibly fresh coming from right down the street from Seattle’s famous Pike Place Market. Amazingly fresh local produce, the freshest seafood and beef, and all paired with out of this world beer. If you have the chance to attend one of their beer dinners in the future, I suggest you do your best to make it. In the meantime, here is the menu with some pictures of the one I experienced. Firestone Walker to debut Parabola

Beer

Firestone Walker Parabola Firestone Walker, the Mid-Size Brewing Company that won Champion Brewery in its category at the 2010 World Beer Cup, has continued their monstrous momentum as they prepare to release Parabola. A nearly fabled beer, you had to be at the right place at the right time to try this beer on tap or you had to be able to discern this beer from the other beers blended into what makes Firestone Walker’s acclaimed anniversary blends.

Number one in their new Proprietor’s Reserve Series, Parabola is a huge 13% Russian Imperial Stout that has been blended with previous vintages and then left to rest in bourbon barrels for a year. One can only guess what may follow Parabola in the series… Bravo? Abacus? Opal? Time will tell. But for now, it’s Parabola. Set to be released May 8th at the Firestone Walker Brewery and The Taproom Restaurant in Buellton, California, it will be limited to only 1,000 cases with a suggested price of $15.99 per 22 ounce bottle. As with their anniversary beers, this is a one time deal and will sell out quickly. Not only will it sell out quickly, but it will also be hard to find with those 1,000 cases being divided up between select accounts in 5 states and arriving around mid-May. See the full post »

Europeans are a different breed, and I really dig that. It’s not uncommon for them to take multi-week holidays during the summer and long lunches where they partake in fine alcoholic beverages. We could learn much from our brethren on the opposite side of the Atlantic. See the full post »
