Mutineer Magazine Issue 19

From the Issue 19 Letter from the Editor:
“My fellow Mutineers, this is technically the first issue of the fourth year of Mutineer Magazine. Yes folks, this proverbial battleship of fine beverage righteousness has relentlessly pressed on, blasting against the confused currents of a culture in the midst of an awkward adolescence that will likely only be truly appreciated with hindsight.

My fine beverage brethren, the time has come to put on your Che t-shirt and cue up the White Album, because we are in the midst of a people’s drink revolution of the highest order. It’s essentially a waking dream, except real.”

And he even continues further. How can one not get excited about that? Throughout Issue 19 of Mutineer Magazine, you will find that same intensity for today’s beverage culture.

The September/October 2011 Issue of Mutineer Magazine brings you:

Behind the Peep Hole: Ken Burns’ “Prohibition”

Mutineer gives you a first glimpse into Ken Burn’s Prohibition, his three-part documentary film series that tells the story of the rise, rule and fall of the Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the entire era it encompassed. Flappers and fedoras are only part of the story of Prohibition. Ken Burns digs deeper in his new documentary.

Birreria

What happens when you take talented brewers from two continents and partner them with an Iron Chef? Amazing things… on a rooftop.

Gypsy Brewing

A band of brewers questioned the traditional brewery model and wrote their own rules. They’re called gypsy brewers, and they’re challenging the craft beer world.

Mutineer Interview: Steve Heimoff

Part wine journo, part blogger, Steve Heimoff is a rare species. Mutineer tracked down the elusive hybrid to ask him a few burning questions.

Hungry Mutineer: Tailgating

Mutineer Food Editor Erin Jimcosky teaches you how to tailgate… Izakaya style. She prepares her favorite American tailgate fare with a Japanese Izakaya twist and pairs it with some great Japanese beer selections.

The September/October issue also includes:
Dan Dunn’s Civilization and Its Discontents: Another Gin-Soaked Degenerate
The Plaid Avenger: Malbec
What People Drink: David Walker, Firestone Walker Brewing Co.
What People Drink: Jackson Sisters, Jackson Family Wines
Wine Steals: California Red Blends
Behind The Bottle: The Last Glass

The festival, which celebrates all things canned craft beer, will take place November 12th in beautiful downtown Reno. Tickets went on sale yesterday and are just $25 for as much canned craft beer as you can enjoy in one night. If you purchase your tickets by October 13th, you will automatically get a VIP ticket at normal price and you’ll be able to enter the festival an hour early for the Mutineer Magazine VIP Hour, giving you the opportunity to enjoy canned craft beer for an extra hour. Mutineer is also honored to be judging the Mutineer Magazine Sponsored CANFEST “Best in Show” Award.

Our friends at CANFEST are just as excited as we are, “Mutineer Magazine is one of our all-time favorite wine, beer, and spirit magazines, and we are honored to announce that they have joined the CANFEST team in 2011 to make this year more dynamic than ever. Why are they so great? Because their honest, original, and often times humorous approach to the beverage world makes for insightful AND entertaining content. And they have excellent taste, too! Mutineer is the official sponsor of our VIP hour (all the more reason to buy your tickets early), and will bring magazines, magazine subscriptions to give away, and judge the CANFEST “Best in Show” award.”

Lastly, only two weeks remain for the blogger contest! One lucky beer blogger will win a FREE trip to CANFEST including airfare to Reno, hotel, and entry to all CANFEST festivities. All you have to do is submit a post on why you deserve to come and then mobilize your team of voters when it opens up. Visit here for more info.

Remember to stop by our booth where we’ll be selling subscriptions, giving away magazines, giving away subscriptions and who knows what else. See you there!

Surly Darkness 2011 label

On October 22, the 2011 vintage of Surly Darkness will be unleashed. Having featured everything from a vampire to a mummy to the devil since its bottled release in 2007, 2011′s theme will be a zombie. The inscription on the label reads:

Oct 22, 2011 1127 hrs
Journal of Omar Ansari–Day 1460

I can hear them outside again, pounding at the gate. This marauding army of undead can’t be held at back much longer. Their thirst for Darkness is unrelenting, and my fuel and rations will be gone by nightfall. Only the robust flavors of this massive Russian Imperial Stout will appease them. I must give them what they want. I just hope we have enough. No! The gate has been breached. I hope that help soon…

Will you be at Darkness Day? Visit them at SurlyBrewing.com.
