Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Named “Green Business of the Year” by EPA

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co's Solar Panels

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., easily one of my favorite breweries for a multitude of reasons, has yet another accolade to add to their repertoire of awards and achievements. This isn’t any regular old award and it’s not for brewing the best IPA or pale ale (both of which they do magnificently), it’s for something they continually challenge themselves and strive to do and it’s something that sets them apart from the rest of the industry. Sierra Nevada is being honored by the Environmental Protection Agency for their environmental stewardship and their continued efforts to conserve resources and focus on sustainable business practices, all while pioneering the way for other breweries and businesses to follow. They accomplish this through a variety of ways, to include one of the largest private solar panel arrays and fuel cell installations in the county, recycling, heat recovery, CO2 recovery, energy efficiency, water conservation, and an abundance of different methods, some of which are quite simple and others that are rather complex and expensive to accomplish … but this is something that Sierra Nevada feels very strongly about and it’s evident that the costs to them greatly outweighs the negative impacts done to the environment.

I highly suggest you head to Sierra Nevada’s website and check out what they’re doing to operate cleanly, efficiently, and green and I hope you are as impressed about it as I am. With that, I leave you with Sierra Nevada’s commendation from the EPA:

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is recognized for its environmental leadership in the brewing industry. Since 1980, the company has consistently implemented sustainability policies and projects that reduced the company’s environmental footprint across all of its operations. The brewery implemented a zero-waste policy — diverting 99.5 percent of its solid waste from the landfill through source reduction, recycling, and composting. Sierra Nevada has made significant investments in renewable power, which now supplies 85 percent of the company’s electricity needs. The company has reduced its water use year after year, and has also implemented an innovative water recycling program. Beyond its own operations, the brewery is working with its suppliers and partners to reduce the impact of their products. Sierra Nevada is the largest buyer of organic hops in the country, and established a “Farm with your Brewer” program to encourage small hops farmers to adopt sustainable practices. From field to bottle, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company strives to maintain a healthy balance between environmental stewardship, social equity, and economic stability.

Sierra Nevada, thank you and congratulations on the very much deserved award.

We live a block from SN Brew co. and it constantly smells delicious, hops barley, malt 24/7. My boyfriend just did a project on renewable power for his power lineman school, and initially the employees were cleaning the solar panels, until they realized it took them like months just to do one cleaning. They are a great company to work for, I hear they even have a Dr. staffed 24/7. If you happen to be on Chico try our locals only beer called Old Chico. The new camp beer is delicious is a new beer just out that I am loving right now.

Luck you to only live a block away! Must be nice :) I could have rambled on for pages about how awesome Sierra Nevada is, but I kept it short so as to not bore my readers … but they truly are incredible. I’ll keep and eye out for the new camp beer and I can’t wait to stop through again!
