I’m a huge fan of Deschutes Brewery from Bend, Oregon and as a craft beer addict, I am thankful for having always had a plentiful supply of their spectacular brews since I was of legal drinking age. I’ve also been fortunate enough to meet the extraordinary people behind their award winning brews and it’s a simple case of great people making great beer. As mentioned, they are from Oregon and one of the really cool things I continually see with Deschutes is their connection with Oregon and it’s more than just the place they are from. You can see Oregon in the names of their beers, in their labels, in the inspiration of each of their unique and exciting beers.

Below is a video for Deschutes that was created by their advertising agency that I really liked and I wanted to share with you. I must point out, however, that there is a very brief moment (one second) of partial female nudity around 3:15, so please be mindful of that. I think it’s a very cool video that captures a lot of the soul that is Deschutes and it also shows some of the inspirations behind their very cool labels. With that said, enjoy.

Whisky Stones

For those that like an unadulterated dram, there are whisky stones made by Teroforma. I have never personally used these, but they are a very cool concept and I would definitely like to try them. Andrew Hellman, owner of Teroforma, doesn’t take credit for designing a stone cube, rather he transplanted an age-old concept from Scandinavia, where they have been making and using whisky stones for years. He took this idea and decided to produce them in the US, using locally sourced soapstone and local craftsmanship, all to get that perfectly chilled dram without watering down the precious liquor.

Directions couldn’t be easier .. throw three or four whisky stones into the freezer for four hours and then add them into a pour of your favorite spirit and let stand for five minutes to chill. Rinsable, reusable, too easy. One thing to note, these won’t work for higher volume beverages like juice, soda, icea tea, etc. I’m really digging their slogan though, Ice Melts, Whisky Rocks.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co's Solar Panels

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., easily one of my favorite breweries for a multitude of reasons, has yet another accolade to add to their repertoire of awards and achievements. This isn’t any regular old award and it’s not for brewing the best IPA or pale ale (both of which they do magnificently), it’s for something they continually challenge themselves and strive to do and it’s something that sets them apart from the rest of the industry. Sierra Nevada is being honored by the Environmental Protection Agency for their environmental stewardship and their continued efforts to conserve resources and focus on sustainable business practices, all while pioneering the way for other breweries and businesses to follow. They accomplish this through a variety of ways, to include one of the largest private solar panel arrays and fuel cell installations in the county, recycling, heat recovery, CO2 recovery, energy efficiency, water conservation, and an abundance of different methods, some of which are quite simple and others that are rather complex and expensive to accomplish … but this is something that Sierra Nevada feels very strongly about and it’s evident that the costs to them greatly outweighs the negative impacts done to the environment. Firestone Walker Double Jack Imperial IPA

The release of Firestone Walker Brewing Company’s Imperial IPA, Double Jack, is a renewed commitment to providing exemplary examples of ales, true to style. Double Jack brings all the hoppiness you expect from a California double but with a Central Coast sensibility of balance and easy finish.

The Double Jack recipe takes its inspiration of our two-time Great American Beer Festival gold medal winning Union Jack. By using more of the same ingredients that comprise Union Jack gives Double Jack the familiar flavor of its little brother with more malt flavor and alcohol. This beer rewards drinking in moderation and sharing with friends.

Double Jack will be available in a wider distribution than any other Firestone Walker beer release before. It will be available all along the West Coast in California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada and Arizona. It will also be making its way across the country with beer coming to New York, New Jersey, Washington D.C., Chicago and Virginia on the first of the year. It will also be in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Missouri and Kansas later in the year.

Double Jack is part of Firestone Walker’s Proprietor Reserve Series, which is bringing the most unique and interesting beers the brewery has to offer to the country.
