Each day, social media finds a new way to be a part of our everyday lives. Not limited to just consumers, it has worked itself into the realm of fine beverage culture and even to companies dating back nearly 150 years. That company is Glenfiddich. Each year, Glenfiddich releases their Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve which is an extremely limited edition single malt Scotch whisky. In years past, the Glenfiddich Malt Master would invite a panel of whisky experts and enthusiasts to join him in tasting and eventually choosing their favorite whisky from a group of pre-selected casks. Their choice would become that year’s Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve.
This year, however, they decided to mix it up … how the panel performed anyways, NOT the Scotch. Eight panelists from around the world along with Malt Master Brian Kinsman would nose and taste each single malt sample at the same time, sharing their thoughts on Twitter as they sampled their way through four different casks. Each American oak hogshead cask was filled on the same day and with the same batch, but as each cask rested for over 30 years, each would begin to develop its own distinctive personality and characteristics.
Ultimately, cask number 28152 would walk away the victor and would be named Glenfiddich 2010 Vintage Reserve. Filled September 25, 1978, cask number 28152 was described as having “notes of orange marmalade, hints of toffee and vanilla as well as boiled sweets and candied fruit.” The other casks displayed characteristics such as “beautiful deep amber colour”, “powerful notes of oak”, and “deep notes of citrus”, so it’s evident that each cask was very unique. Cask 28152, which has a current strength of 50% abv, will produce approximately 200 70cl cask-strength bottles
“Tweeting seemed to help people refine their thoughts and impressions of to the key aromas and tastes they picked up on. I’m delighted that cask number 28152 has been selected as the 2010 Vintage Reserve; it is an exceptional single malt with classic Glenfiddich fruit characteristics on the nose,” Kinsman added.
So to you, cask number 28152, congratulations. To Glenfiddich, I love Scotch. I love Twitter. @MutineerMag. Let’s make it happen.
