Beer Geek FTW: Firestone Walker Brewmaster Matt Brynildson Breaks Down “Velvet Merlin”

Disclaimer: You are about to enter the beer geek zone. Firestone Walker Velvet MerlinI absolutely love kicking it back with brewers, talking science, talking art, and totally geeking-out over beer. In my world, very few things compare to hanging out at a brewery, with the brewer, on brewday, drinking his/her beer with him/her. After all, if there is anyone who knows more about a specific beer than anyone else, it is the very person that brews it.

At the beginning of this October, Firestone Walker will be releasing its Velvet Merlin, a limited seasonal oatmeal stout, for the first time under its new name. It was previously called Velvet “Merkin” — the definition for merkin being a “pubic wig” (not quite an appropriate beer name).

Below is a video of the Brewmaster, Matt Brynildson (also known as “Merlin” among his Firestone colleagues), describing the recipe development and creation of Velvet Merlin — which is like virtually drinking with the brewmaster himself. And, you don’t need to be a beer geek to get the jist. FTW!

For more information on Velvet Merlin, tasting notes, and pairing suggestions pick up the next issue of Mutineer Magazine, hitting newsstands at the end of this month. The beer is featured in the “Cult Beer Radar” column, authored by yours truly.

    Had the chance to try this several months back (under the name Velvet Merkin, of course) and it was amazing. Can’t wait for it to come out, and I like how they’re bringing it in 6 packs!!

    I’ve never had it … so I’m really excited about this batch. Especially after writing about it for the soon-to-be-released issue of Mutineer Magazine!

    According to Firestone Walker, Velvet Merlin will be distributed everywhere that Solice is available. Is this correct?

    @The Hoparazzi –

    That’s correct, and they’re even pushing their distribution to the east coast!

    I think Merkin is a way cooler name than Merlin. They should change it back.

    They were probably fearing the hassle of getting their labels turned down by The Man with it named Velvet Merkin .. so they went with Velvet Merlin. The beer is already slightly delayed, and another delay due to label complications would suck!

  8. William Bennett | Tuesday, August 17, 2010

    Yeah that would suck. I guess the label really isn’t as important as the beer is. Heck, I could drink the beer without the label for all I care.

    I want one right now….
