2010 Copa Jerez Competition: Destination Spain


Copa Jerez Sherry Competition

When most Americans think of sherry they think of the cheap-ass bottle their mom kept next to the stove for soups or (in my case) the dreaded sherry creams. Lately the tides have begun to change and their current has begun to flow towards Jerez, Spain and the insanely delicious sherry being produced.

The good people at the Sherry Council of America are doing their best to change our general apathy towards the drink. One way is by hosting one of the coolest contests ever; Copa Jerez, a food and sherry pairing competition. Competitors from around the world will claw and scrape their way to Jerez for what will likely be an epic struggle of gastronomy pitting teams comprised of chef and sommelier against one another.

The categories of competition are:

  • Best dry wine match
  • Best medium match
  • Ultimate sweet wine and dessert pairing
  • Top Sommelier Presentation of Sherry Overall
  • COPA Jerez Overall Champions: Best Food and Wine of Jerez Matching, Three Courses

The Sherry Council of America is accepting submissions until August 15th to see who will compete in New York on October 6th for a chance to represent the United States in Jerez this January.

    I only JUST started getting into Sherry about a year and a half ago when I was studying for my Certified Specialist of Wine and I learned about how awesome the Solera process is. Still don’t know too much about it, and I’m clueless when it comes to pairing it with food. This post makes me think I need to hit the books again.

    Oooooh maybe Erin would be kind enough to help me develop a recipe to pair with Sherry? How fun would that be?

    Ashley, let’s get on it already! I am completely obsessed with sherry we’ll have to have a lesson over several bottles . . . for learning purposes of course.

    Chris, right on both accounts. I feel that this is a topic that should be further explored by myself and my photographer.
