The Most Expensive Champagne…Ever
Originally posted on: Tuesday, April 21, 2009
The #3 most viewed Mutineer blog post of 2009 tells the story of the most expensive bottle of Champagne ever, which hails all the way from 1928. I’m sure it makes for a hell of a Bellini.
$21,200 will buy you the most expensive Champagne ever, unless of course you paid $21,201 for a different bottle. The new king of costly Champagne is a 1928 Krug, which sold on March 28 in Hong Kong at the Acker Merrall & Condit auction. While the grapes were from the 1928, the Champagne hit the market in 1939. While 1928 is supposed to be a great vintage (I haven’t had any myself lately), the vintages of the early 1930s were a bit of a lull according to the press release from Krug, making the wine even more desirable.
According to Decanter.com, “The record was previously held by a Methuselah (6 litre bottle) of Louis Roederer, Cristal Brut 1990, Millenium 2000 that sold in the US for US$17,625 in December 2005. According to Serena Sutcliffe MW, Champagne expert and the head of rival auction house Sotheby’s, the 1928 Krug is ‘one of the greatest Champagnes ever made’.”
Bellini anyone?
