CellarPass

A new website CellarPass is looking to make it easier to visit wine country with its new online winery reservation system. The system has a lot of depth and offers information about wineries in regions in California, Oregon, Washington, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and more. There is also information on winery events, and while this site is just getting rolling, I’m excited about its potential to help people build their own itineraries for winery trips and can’t wait to see how it develops. Imperial Stout Trooper

A stormtrooper-themed stout? I’ll take one, right now. Now all I need is a Darth Vader Pale Ale, a Chewbacca Brown Ale, and a vintage Star Wars play set and we’ll have ourselves a party. Look sir, droids!

According to the fine folks at Beernews.org:

Just a heads up on New England Imperial Stout Trooper. This will be hitting shelves the week before Christmas in 750ml bottles. Same great beer, but now in bigger bottles. As far as quantity, it’s looking like about 150 cases of 750ml bottles will leave the brewery. There are plans for a bourbon barrel aged version to be released at the brewery sometime around March.

Beer Cake

Big news; the publishing company behind Mutineer Magazine officially turns two today! This is the equivalent of 14 dog years or 120 business-in-a-recession years, and we are PUMPED to have blasted our way through this most dark and depressing of financial times. The Mutineer Holiday Subscription Drive is booming and we are hoping it can be the thing that finally turns this recession around.

In other news, we received an award from the upstanding Jeff Lefevere at GoodGrape for “Most Improved Player”, saying: Continue Reading »

World's First Single Malt Menorah

Photo credit: Andrew H. Williams Photography

All you need to know here is “7 foot menorah”, “clear piping”, and “65 Litres of Single Malt Scotch”. Yes people, this is the real deal: a massive, Scotch-filled menorah that claims to be the world’s first. This was definitely a step up from the chocolate menorah’s of years passed. Tullibardine Distillery donated the Scotch, which was shared with guests that came to view the menorah lighting.

Big thanks to the author Yaacov Behrman for sending this our way!

If I was any more pumped up about the upcoming film “Blood Into Wine“, I’d rent a massive RV, pile in the entire Mutineer staff, and Cannonball Run down to Arizona to do an interview and cover shoot with the man himself…Oh wait, WE DID, and that spectacularly spectacular issue will hit newsstands on January 5. You can also subscribe by January 15 and get this epic issue sent right to your door. “Blood Into Wine” chronicles the wine adventures of rocker Maynard James Keenan and winemaking partner Eric Glomski in the Arizona desert. Very cool, very cool indeed.

Deschutes Cinder Cone Red Ale

Deschutes Brewery’s seasonal “Cinder Cone Red” is slated to cease production very soon, with “The Last Run of Cinder Cone: Celebrating the Life of Cinder Cone Red” happening on January 5th, marking the end of an era for this popular northwest seasonal amber ale.

Black Strap Stout
BridgePort Brewing Company Black Strap Stout at the BridgePort Ale House.

Portland has a KILLER scene for craft brews. I had the pleasure of judging a food and beer pairing event for Deschutes last night at the Deschutes Public House and spent the day prior aimlessly wandering from craft brewery to craft brewery. Look for coverage of the Deschutes event in the March issue of Mutineer. Here are a couple shots from Sunday’s adventures: Continue Reading »

Wine bars frighten me. There, I said it. There’s that guy behind the bar whose nose and palate are better than yours, and he can tell you the median temperature on a postage stamp sized parcel of land where maybe one of the grapes that was crushed to make the wine you’re drinking came from. Intimidating, no? Continue Reading »
