Having heard of Founders Brewing Co. and never trying them, I figured what better time than now. Having been on a bit of a spending spree on beer recently and hearing nothing but amazing things from this Grand Rapids, Michigan brewery, it was time to finally put them to the test, which I would do with their Imperial Stout. Founded in 1997, owners Mike and Dave decided to break the norm of the beer industry and wanted to push the envelope of what people were used to, with more flavor, bigger body, huge aromatics, and increased complexity. In this search, they would find consumers looking for the same thing out of a brewery. And here at Mutineer Magazine, we can definitely appreciate their efforts and what they are all about. Taken from their website, “At Founders we don’t brew for the masses. We leave that up to the mainstream shooby-doers. Instead, we craft a beer for a chosen few, a small cadre of renegades and rebels who enjoy a beer that pushes the limits of what is commonly accepted as taste. In short, we make beer for people who appreciate something different. We make beer for people like us.” Well said. Continue Reading »
Grand View owner Donald Crabtree with his topless staff
Bikini coffee shops have become popular in recent years, with some taking the concept “all the way” with coffee shops featuring topless servers, such as the Grand View Topless Coffee Shop in Vassalboro, Maine.
You have to be 18 years old to enter Grand View Topless Coffee Shop, and owner Donald Crabtree told CNN in February 2009 that business has been great, “It’s just been crowds mobbing in”, which is another example of fine beverage pitching in to help out the struggling economy. Continue Reading »
As found in the Urban Dictionary, Energyology officially means “A term coined by energy drink expert Jeff Dorenbush, who invented the discipline of energyology, or the study of energy drinks.”
To use in a sentence, “My name is Jeff Dorenbush, and I’m a black belt in energyology.”
The definition was officially added to the Urban Dictionary on September 4, 2008, and has become a go-to term in the world of the Mutineer. Issue Four featured the first Energyology feature about the ingredients and nutritional differences between different popular energy drinks. Stay tuned for more great Energyology content to come…
Murphy Goode is making a statement by searching for the first “Murphy-Goode Wine Country Lifestyle Correspondent”. This whole thing has something to do with Vikings and a strange form of street justice called Liar’s Dice, but I’m still into it. Continue Reading »

With less than two months to go, the 2009 Wine Bloggers’ Conference is right around the corner and already has 180 participants signed up and preparing their palates for a truly exceptional weekend of all things new wine media.
The Mutineers are sponsoring and will be there in full force to connect with bloggers, cover the action, and hopefully have a showdown between us and Steve Heimoff and his non-existent entourage of irrelevant writers. Heimoff was a speaker at last years WBC, forcing me to choose between challenging him to a duel or actually learning something in another seminar being held at the same time. I chose the latter, and the wily Heimoff snuck out the back before I could call him out. Like Captain Ahab and Moby Dick, Batman and Joker, and Energyologist Jeff Dorenbush and non-caffeinated beverages, all arch-nemesis’s must eventually meet… Continue Reading »
Beer: Fire Rock Pale Ale
Brewery: Kona Brewing Company
Style: Pale Ale
Suggested Glassware: Pint glass
Great labeling caught my eye first, then great taste kept me wanting more. Fire Rock Pale ale from Hawaii offers plenty of flavor its mainland cousins have.
In 1995 Kona Brewing Company was founded on Hawaii’s Big Island of Kailua Kona by father and son team Cameron Healy and Spoon Khalsa. Offering an array of styles from their original Big Wave Golden Ale to the Pipeline Porter that is made with 100% Hawaiian Kona coffee. Continue Reading »
