Beer: Kasteel Rouge
Brewery: Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck
Style: Fruit Beer
The castle in which Kasteel is brewed dates back to 1075 A.D. and has seen many residents in its long history from the Count of Flanders to it’s current owner the Van Honsebrouck family. Poised on the Mandel river between Bruges and Courtrai the castle was referred to as the key to Flanders.
Kasteel Rouge is aptly named for it’s deep, dark red color brought on by the addition of sour cherries to a base of brown ale, which is then left in the barrel for a six month period. This ale will surprise many with the sour of the cherries and the 8% alcohol level.

Be careful when you visit their website.. It’s like this intense video game-styled navigation system. You wander through the castle in order to browse their website, but when you decide to “Discover Their Beers” and head to the basement you will find yourself in a pitch black room… I have yet to find the light switch. Help?
