For chocoholics Valentine’s Day is the end all be all of holidays. For beer lovers this is a perfect opportunity to show just how well beer pairs with this holiday treat. The best pairings are with craft beers and good chocolate.

Dark beers work especially well and are created by roasted malt, which brings a toasted, caramel, coffee and sometimes chocolate flavor to the beer. The flavors in these compliment each other for the perfect marriage. I suggest Stone Brewing Company’s Smoked Porter with dark chocolate truffles.

Another great pairing is the spiciness of chili peppers and chocolate. This combination has a long history especially in South American cultures where chocolate was considered an aphrodisiac. Try Rogue Ale’s Chipotle Ale with a bittersweet chocolate bar.

Never knew what to think about the smoked, chipotle, etc., style beers. Next time I swing by a place that carries this type of brew, I’ll definitely give it a try.

I love Rogue beers, their pub in North Beach in SF is one of my favorite haunts.
