Bacon and vodka. Sounds ridiculous, right? Well, I was at a bar the other night talking to the bartender and the subject of bacon came up. One thing led to another and he finally came out and told me that he tried and experiment involving bacon and vodka.
One night at home while playing around with smoked bacon he glanced over at his bottle of vodka, that I’m sure was being consumed, and thought, “What a great idea, bacon flavored vodka.” He placed a slice or two of swine in the bottle and recapped it and let it sit for a couple of days. After trying this new concoction, he was pleasantly surprised to find the flavor was quite appealing. He suggests to serve smoked bacon vodka on the rocks or mixed with a small amount of bloody marry mix. I intend to try this fairly unknown delicacy with my favorite vodka, Jean-Marc XO, so be ready for a full review of the best undiscovered drink in history.
Apparently this thoughtful bartender I met wasn’t the only one with a bacon driven mind, Don Yovicsin, owner of Jake’s Dixie Roadhouse in Waltham, also makes a bacon-flavored vodka. The good folks over at browniepointsblog.com are also supporters of the bacon and vodka collaboration.

The Fronterra Grill in Chicago had a bacon margarita on the menu when I traveled out there in May of last year. It was made with housemade bacon infused tequila. My friend ordered it … it was definitely different.

Bacon-flavored chocolate is surprisingly good as well.

As usual, Americans do two things well: take a good idea and run it completely into the ground or take a bad idea and run it completely into the ground. I’m a self-confessed bacon freak (actually trying my hand at making my own for the first time, along with sausages, salumi, etc.) but now we’re seeing bacon in everything. I guess it’s better than the ubiquitous sun-dried tomato of the 80s, but it’s all getting a bit silly capitalizing on the bacon trend! Nonetheless, it sounds REALLY good ;-)
