What do 11,084 websites and 11,712,008 RSS readers have in common today? They are all putting the spotlight on poverty today as part of Blog Action Day 2008. Mutineer Magazine is proud to be a part of this event as well as be a long time supporter of One.org, an organization of 2.4 million people and over 100 non-profit organizations.
One.org partner www.bread.org estimates 923 million people go hungry in the world, with 16,000 children dying every day from hunger-related causes. Suddenly the difference between a 2004 and 2005 Bordeaux doesn’t seem so important…
Taking the issues a step further, DATA (Debt AIDS Trade Africa) is an extension of One.org specifically targeting Africa. There is a wealth of information on the One.org site, but being that we are students of beverage, lets examine water in Africa.
Unsafe water is pretty nasty, causing intestinal worms, cholera, and diarrhea. What a bummer, to die from diarrhea. It happens too; a child born in Africa is 500 times more likely to die from diarrhea than a child born in a first world country. All in all, water related deaths add up to between 5,000 and 6,000 a day…really?
Check out One.org for more information and how to get involved at the local level.
