In 1982, one of the boldest marketing moves ever was made when two of the globe’s most compelling brands joined forces to rock the hell out of America: Schlitz beer and The Who.
It was a natural move when you think about. Personally, whenever I open an ice cold Schlitz, the first thing that comes to mind is, “Damn, I really want to the listen to The Who right now.” And when I’m listening to The Who in headphones, more often than not there is a delicious Schlitz beer in my hand. Being a native Washingtonian, Wine Mutineer Alan Kropf has a soft spot in his heart for the wines of the Evergreen State. Given the wines being produced, that soft spot has evolved to a constant craving. I had the opportunity to ask Joel Butler, the Director of Education and Master of Wine at Chateau Ste. Michelle, some questions about Washington wine. Continue Reading »
When I moved from Seattle to Los Angeles, I was prepared for much higher real estate costs, though I did not consider the higher price of cocktails. Twenty dollars is not an uncommon price for a cocktail in a club, with bottle service starting at around $300 and going up to $40,000 for a 3 Liter bottle limited edition of 1998 Dom Perignon at the swank new Kress nightclub in West Hollywood. Bottle service isn’t the only way to spend enough in a club to buy a Vespa scooter, check out these cocktails for the affluent: Continue Reading »

So after spending two hours with Mad Men’s John Williams, I am convinced that he is a man of purpose, and that purpose is swindling free surfing lessons from Mad Men star John Slattery. Beyond that, he is an experienced bartender, an up and coming Hollywood actor, and a partner in www.themonkeybox.com, a sketch comedy site that is getting the attention of more than just John’s Monkey Box cast members. Remember this show? Probably not. It enjoyed a short lived life on Fox as a reality show about Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick, producers from American Idol, as they purchase and run a vineyard in Paso Robles, California. Continue Reading »

It is official, Anheuser-Busch and InBev and are merging into, wait for it, Anheuser-Busch InBev, making them the largest brewing company in the world, and one of the top five largest consumer products companies in the world. I suspect it is Anheuser-Busch’s control of the “Chelada” brand that tipped the scales of this merger into a capitalistic orgasm. Now the new super company will control over 100 brands including Budweiser, Michelob, Bass, Beck’s, Grolsch, Hoegaarden, Stella Artois, Rolling Rock, Busch, Bacardi Ice, and my personal favorite, Hurricane Ice Malt Liquor.
