Mad Men’s John Williams

John Williams
So after spending two hours with Mad Men’s John Williams, I am convinced that he is a man of purpose, and that purpose is swindling free surfing lessons from Mad Men star John Slattery. Beyond that, he is an experienced bartender, an up and coming Hollywood actor, and a partner in www.themonkeybox.com, a sketch comedy site that is getting the attention of more than just John’s Monkey Box cast members.

Bartending
Williams is a bartender for sure. I’ve put in my time working some of Los Angeles’s best restaurants, and I’ve come across two kinds of people: people who are passionate about what they do, and people who treat hospitality jobs like a means to an end while they wait for the powers at be in Hollywood to wake up from their reality coma and make all of their acting dreams come true.

Like I was saying, John Williams is a bartender, an opinionated bartender at that. The bartending gospel according to John says that mint in a mojito should be torn and not muddled, most drinks have far too much alcohol in them, and the proper amount of ice in a drink is absolutely crucial for it to be balanced.

Acting
Williams plays “Warren McKenna” on AMC’s “Mad Men”, the hottest show on TV. Williams is guarded about details of the show’s plot as it steamrolls into its second season, though we have confirmed that the “Warren McKenna” character does have an office with his name on the door. That’s about all we could pry out of this properly trained actor.

Mad Men

What isn’t a secret is the shows killer writing and portrayal of a drink culture authentic to early 1960’s Manhattan (including drinks of the same name). Crystal decanters full of single malts are indispensable office accessories, and secretaries are told to keep a bottle of hard stuff in their desks as backup for their bosses.

What does John think you should pair with an evening of “Mad Men”? An extra dirty Chopin martini of course, because all of the guys on the show are “so smooth, and so dirty”.

The Monkey Box
Just so he can make people feel lazy, Williams also is a part of The Monkey Box, a web site of irreverent videos that is described on the web site as being “better than soup”. The Monkey Box has been well received by cubicle slaves everywhere, and plans of expanding into a legitimate television show are slowly, but steadily materializing into full fledged rumors…stay tuned. In the meantime, watch yourself some “Mad Men” and make this John Williams signature cocktail:

– Fill a 16 oz. Glass with ice
– 1 oz. Vodka
– 1/2 oz. Peach schnapps
– 3 oz. Sour mix
– 1 oz club soda
– Shake ingredients together and pour into glass
– Top with a “sink” of Chambord (pour on the top of the drink and it will sink to the bottom, creating a pretty psychedelic effect)
